When we hear about speaking in tongues, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Do we think babbling with our mouths is a form of speaking in tongues, or speaking in another language?
Let us dive into the word of God to find if speaking in tongues really means speaking in another language. In Acts 2:4-6 talks about the disciples who received the Holy Spirit and was given the gift to speak in tongues. “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.” So this tells us right off the bat that they were given the ability to communicate in other languages to be able to spread the gospel as was said “that every man heard them speak in his own language.”
Now going to 1Corinthians 14, where Paul describes what speaking in tongues shall do for others, and also who will be able to not only hear, but understand was is being spoken. In 1Cor 14:13 “Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.” Why is Paul speaking of being able to interpret tongues? It is because God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints, v33. God requires decency and order in His church, not discourtesy and chaos. Paul declares in verses 27-28 “If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.” Let’s say we were to go and visit a church who spoke in another language that we weren’t able to understand, would you stay and ask for an interpreter in order to be able to hear what’s being spoken, or leave? What could we possibly gain from something that you do not understand? Nothing. For is says “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?” 1Cor 14:15-16. Notice it says “praying with the understanding also” we cannot speak in a state where others let alone the Holy Spirit cannot comprehend the meaning of what we are saying. How would anything get done, how would our prayers get answered if we don’t even understand what we ourselves are saying with the babbling of our mouths?
If we speak in tongues (other languages) there must be an interpreter otherwise we must keep silent so that we may not cause confusion amongst others.
Remember “Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1Corinthians 14:40
